Picking furnishings for your space
Furniture shopping can be… intense. Especially if you’re flying blind on style, size (and constraints) and total budget. Having a plan in place will greatly decrease the anxiety of the experience and will help to ensure that you end up happy with the final result.
Things to consider:
Size constraints: If you’re in a condo, you’ll likely be shopping for modest sized pieces that are functional and multi-purpose in nature. Think coffee tables that can be used as additional seating for party situations, fold out sofas, etc. Look for words like ‘condo sized’ to describe sofas - they will likely fit better and not look too oversized.
The style of your home: Is it a modern condo? Heritage home? Understanding the home’s age will help you identify quirks that can either be accentuated or played down. Older buildings sometimes have bathrooms and kitchens that are less than fancy, but the furnishings you choose can help them seem less dated.
Your own style: What do you want this place to say about YOU? Take your family situation into context: if you have kids, then likely your priority will be focused around making a family safe environment for playtime and shared meals. If you’re single, it might make sense to splurge on tech-ing out the space if that’s your thing. Keep colour palettes and textures in mind as you begin to think of the look and feel that you’re after.
Using a professional to help you through the process is usually a good idea. Designers and decorators know what to focus on and know how to keep projects within a balanced budget that is pre-determined at the start. Consider talking to professionals or friends and family before you get started with your project for inspiration - but enjoy the thrill of the hunt!
